Never Alone

Do you ever feel alone? Do you sometimes feel like it’s you against the world? I want to share something that I have realized —  I can choose to feel lonely, but I am never alone. If I feel alone, it is because I choose to ignore who I really am. When we see ourselves as separate and alone, we are forgetting who we really are. We are seeing ourselves as physical beings… as bodies. It seems logical. My physical body is separate from your physical body; therefore, the “I” that I am must be separate from the “you” that you are. If I am separate from you, I am separate from everyone, and that means that I am on my own in this world… as are you… and everyone else. I don’t know about you, but that can be an overwhelming thought… … until I remember who I really […]

Connecting Deeply with Another

Do you get frustrated with the superficial level of communication that often prevails in society? Do you dream of experiencing deep connections with other people? Look no further than recognizing who you are… and who everyone else is. Think about what can transpire when two people truly see who the other is… when they see each other spirit to spirit… and allow their energies and minds to join. I can tell you from experience. You create a space that is greater than the two of you — a space in which you share deeply and wisdom comes forth that speaks of knowing beyond what you can know at a physical level. This wisdom comes from your spiritual beings. We are not separate from one another. There is no boundary between your spiritual energy and mine. We are all connected as spiritual beings. It is only when we identify ourselves as bodies […]

Do You Choose Love or Fear?

We have all been hurt. The question is: what do we do with that hurt? Do we close down and erect walls around ourselves? Do we keep our guard up so that people can’t get close to us? Do we shut down so that we don’t get hurt again? Perhaps. When we are hurting, it is natural to withdraw and erect inner barriers to defend against future hurt. But another question arises: can you live fully with a closed heart? I have asked myself that very question. After my divorce, it took me a long time to open up to the possibility of a new relationship. When I did… and it ended… I experienced hurt again. I was tempted to withdraw and keep myself safe, but I realized that I had a choice. I could shut down inside so that no one could hurt me again, or I could stay […]

Relationships Provide Our Greatest Teachers: Part 3 — Our Children

As I held you in my arms for the first time      and marveled at your tiny perfection,           how was I to know the magnitude of what you would teach me? As I felt my heart fill and open wide,      how was I to imagine what you would teach me            about the depth and breadth of unconditional love? As I felt the enormity of your complete dependence on me,      how was I to know that your trust and belief            would inspire me to become ever more of whom I am meant to be? How was I to know       that as your parent,           you would be my teacher? As I reflect on the lessons I have learned from my relationships, I realize that my […]

Relationships Provide Our Greatest Teachers: Part Two — Friendships

As I continue my reflections about the teachers who taught me my greatest lessons, my thoughts turn to my dearest friends. Their lessons have come wrapped in shoulders to cry on, arms to hold me, ears to listen, lips to affirm and witness, and hearts to care and believe in me until I was ready to believe in myself. Think about who comes to mind as you read. Consider the lessons your friends have taught you and reflect on their meaning in your life. What priceless lessons have I learned from my friends? They have extended my definition of family from the one I was born into to a more expanded version composed of those who have held me up, believed in me during my darkest days, and given me the strength to stand on my own. They are the champions who celebrated each step I made forward, who cheered me […]

Relationships Provide Our Greatest Teachers: Part One – Romantic Relationships

When you think of teachers, do you think of teachers you had in school? Does your mind return to days of lessons and assignments, and of the person at the front of the room who was responsible for setting the homework and due dates you dreaded? I want to expand your understanding of “teacher,” this from someone who wears a “teacher hat” every day in the classroom. My greatest teachers weren’t my classroom teachers; instead they appeared to teach me priceless lessons in this learning experience called life. My most profound lessons came wrapped in pain and loss, but under the wrapping was true growth that expanded who I am, and for that, I am eternally grateful. As broken as I felt after my ex-husband turned on me and my marriage imploded, I realize that his actions and choices caused me to grow beyond anything I had the capacity to […]

When Our Children Leave Home

Where they were…           is only silence and empty space. My life’s focus is gone; Years of giving myself heart and soul… complete. This home,            once vibrant with the energy of their existence…                     rings quiet… And my heart cries out with missing them. I thought I was ready — I even looked forward to the time I would have…            and now that it’s here, all I want to do is go back. I wander through my memories,            pausing here and there to hold them close, to picture them as they were                     when they were mine; But they are no longer mine…           They never were. They came to this world through me,           but they are not mine. They experienced this world through my existence,     […]

You Are Stronger Than You Know

Halted in my tracks by a woman            sitting hunched in defeat… The image on the TV screen grabbed me with a jolt. I knew her… this woman who was a stranger to me;           the light gone from her downcast eyes,           her skin stretched tight over her shattered spirit,           her fingers clenched,                    holding her core of pain in an iron grip —           afraid to let go,           afraid to look back,           afraid to look ahead;                    fragile…                    defeated…           a shell of the woman she had been […]

Metamorphose…

…the process of finding and stepping into the fullness and beauty of who you are. “Metamorphose” symbolizes the continuing actions, choices, reflections, and realizations that propel us forward on our life journeys. Finding ourselves isn’t one act or event. It is truly a journey — a continuing series of steps forward… and backward… but always with the intent of illuminating our beautiful inner essence. We don’t always recognize that we are more than our confused, insecure selves; at times, we actively fight against it. But our pure divine essence is there… covered by the muck of our struggles, fears, and beliefs…waiting to be found and embraced. As I look back at my life, I marvel at how seemingly unrelated events and choices… and even all the heartbreaks and dead ends…have all intertwined to create my life. Every single experience in my life has woven itself into the fabric of my […]
