What You Seek Is Reflected Back to You

It is easy to think of this as a fearful world. All we have to do is watch the news at any hour on any day to see one crime, wrongdoing, or violent act after another. It is easy to fall prey to the seductive beckoning and propagation of fear. It is easy to fall into the belief that we need to protect ourselves and all that is ours against inevitable attack. It is what we are fed, hour after hour, day after day — a steady diet of fear, attack, and retribution.

Let’s Take Off Our Masks and Let Our Inner Light Shine

As children and adults dress up in costumes and don their masks so that they can celebrate Halloween, I think about the masks we often believe that we need to wear to gain recognition and acceptance in this world. Consider the world of work, social circles, and even our personal lives. How often do we wear masks that portray what we believe is required and hide how we are really feeling or what we truly believe? How often do we pretend to be something we aren’t in order to advance or to gain approval from those in power or with whom we seek acceptance or inclusion? How often do we sublimate our beliefs and values in order to fulfill the requirements of a role we believe we need to fill?

Do I Choose Engagement or Observation?

I always thought that I wanted to engage fully in life and to experience each moment to the fullest. I always believed that it was better to be fully engaged in every experience that life brought me than to be an observer of life. I thought engagement equaled active living and observation equaled passive living, and in my mind, active living was the only choice. I find myself questioning what I always thought and believed.

My Belief That I Am Special

As I have studied A Course in Miracles, I have questioned why I would want to separate from God in the first place. Why would I want to go my own way when my journey has become one of returning home to God?

We Are Anything But Small

We strive so hard to be worthy and to “make it” in this world. We expend huge amounts of effort to attain levels of achievement or positions that our egos tell us are markers of success. Many of us even overextend ourselves financially to buy what we can’t afford in order to project images of success. We push ourselves to do more and acquire more so that we can be more. The question is why? Why do we work so hard to meet these arbitrary standards of worth and success? Why do we fall prey to extrinsic measurements of our worth? The answer is a simple one — we have forgotten who we really are.

Which God Do You Serve?

Do you remember learning about the Ten Commandments? I do. They were part of my Sunday school training, and later, part of my preparation for confirmation in the church my family attended. I really hadn’t given them much thought over the years… that is, until a deeper knowing opened within me recently about the one that states: You shall have no other gods before me. That commandment always seemed easy to me. Of course, I served no other gods! I believe in God, and that belief forms the core of my faith. It always has. I haven’t served any substitute for God… or have I? I had interpreted this commandment in a literal sense. I imagined that it referred to me worshiping some stone image of a pagan deity. That wasn’t me. Although I am no longer religious in the attend-one-church frame of reference, my faith in God is my […]

Going Deeper with Changing Our Thoughts

Last week, I wrote about having the power to control our thoughts. I shared my post with fellow students of A Course in Miracles, and thanks to their feedback and the clarity I received from further reflection and study this week, I want to correct and go deeper with what I wrote for you in the following paragraph: We do have the power to control our thoughts. Instead of letting our ego minds run away with our thoughts, we need to take control with our spiritual minds. How do we do this? We develop awareness of what is preoccupying our thoughts, one thought at a time. When a negative thought crosses our minds, we need to recognize it, stop it, and experience the stillness that is left when there is no thought… if only briefly, until the next thought comes, which will happen quickly at first. The spaces between thoughts will become longer […]

Where Do You Find Your Worth?

Are you searching for that special someone who will complete you? Do you look out at the world and believe that a partner will make you feel a sense of belonging? Do you think that being in a relationship will make you feel worthy? Your worth is not in a relationship. Your worth is in YOU. You are intrinsically worthy because you are a child of God. Are you striving for a certain position or the promotion that will validate your worth? Do you imagine the day when you will have a title that will proclaim your worth to the world? Or, are you frustrated and unhappy in the work that you do because you believe your worth is not recognized? Your worth is not in the work you do nor the positions you hold. Your worth is in YOU. You are intrinsically worthy because, at your essence, you are a Divine expression of God. Do […]
