“You Will Look Upon That Which You Feel Within”

Has anyone else been feeling unsettled and restless? Have you felt unhappy and out of sorts? Since I have returned to work after the holidays, I have experienced a continuous dis-ease within, a dissonant inner hum, if you like. I am out of harmony and off balance, and as I am within, so I see without. My daily experience has confirmed my inner disharmony. Nothing has felt satisfying, and I have been operating in a continual state of “feeling off.”

The Peace Test

How can you be sure that you are going the right way in life? None of wants to commit to a path and then discover that we made the wrong decision. We all want to feel certain about the steps we decide to take or the way in which we are going. There is one sure way that we can know for sure. It is the peace test, and it comes from Chapter 14, XI, 5:2 in A Course in Miracles: “If you are wholly free of fear of any kind, and if all those who meet or even think of you share in your perfect peace, then you can be sure that you have learned God’s lesson, and not your own.”

Learning to Be

I want to celebrate an important milestone on my inner journey with you. I am opening into just being, and it feels wonderful! I have always allowed myself to be ruled by a steady stream of “shoulds” and “have tos” in my mind, and at long last, I am able to release and allow myself to just be. I sensed that I needed to do this as summer holidays beckoned and colleagues talked about their summer plans. Whenever I was asked about my plans, my answer was always the same, “I want time to just be.” I hadn’t given my response a lot of thought; it just rose from within me. As it was expressed, I knew it was what I needed to do. And that is exactly what the first two weeks of my summer break have been all about. Extended periods of time along our walking paths every day have provided me […]

The Freedom of Releasing Control and Learning to Allow

I have made a pact with myself, a pact that is bringing such peace and freedom into my life, that I wonder why it took me so long to accept its importance. My pact is very simple; I release my need to control life and allow life to flow. I have been a “control freak” perfectionist most of my life. Everything had to be done according to my notions of “perfect,” and the one that I was hardest on in this elusive quest for perfection was me. I felt that I needed to take care of every detail so that things were done “right.” That pursuit had a high cost because I demanded 110% of myself for every single thing that I did. I wasn’t content with 90% or even 100%. I had to push myself to give more than was possible or expected so that I could live up […]

Going Deeper with Changing Our Thoughts

Last week, I wrote about having the power to control our thoughts. I shared my post with fellow students of A Course in Miracles, and thanks to their feedback and the clarity I received from further reflection and study this week, I want to correct and go deeper with what I wrote for you in the following paragraph: We do have the power to control our thoughts. Instead of letting our ego minds run away with our thoughts, we need to take control with our spiritual minds. How do we do this? We develop awareness of what is preoccupying our thoughts, one thought at a time. When a negative thought crosses our minds, we need to recognize it, stop it, and experience the stillness that is left when there is no thought… if only briefly, until the next thought comes, which will happen quickly at first. The spaces between thoughts will become longer […]
