What Is That Inner Yearning for More?
Do you sometimes struggle with being in the world? Do you feel like you’re not of this world, that it seems to confront you at every turn, and yet you have to find a way to exist in it? Do you yearn for more, but you can’t seem to find what you seek in the world? I often feel like I’m a stranger here — that I don’t belong — and yet, I’m here. I have to find a way to be in this world, this world that feels too harsh, that often grates against the me that feels so sensitive, so tender, so not of this world.
Grounded in Uncertainty
There is no doubt that we are living in times of great upheaval and uncertainty. For so many of us, it seems that there is less and less to hold onto and to count on in our lives and in the world around us. Waves of change, unexpected losses, and seemingly insurmountable obstacles shadow the lives of so many. As turbulence weaves through the fabric of our lives, we experience fear and anxiety. Where do we turn for the support and security that we can’t seem to find in our outer worlds? How can we stand strong and grounded within the uncertainty that shadows our lives?
Knowing God for Yourself
Are you called to read the writings of spiritual teachers? Do you find yourself eagerly pouncing on their newest offerings, hungry for the words that will take you further on your spiritual quest? Do you note the people whom these teachers quote as further sources for your search? These questions capture my quest over a period of many years. I kept searching and searching, moving from one spiritual teacher to another, digging deeper and developing my understanding of their teachings, but always deferring to these teachers to tell me about God and to inform me about the Divine.
Another Lesson Presents Itself in My Life
In spite of the spiritual growth and deepening awareness I share with you week after week, it was interesting to observe how quickly I fell into the clutches of fear when I received unexpected news last night. In previous posts, I have shared with you my experiences with swollen joints and the message to forgive and release past emotional pain that I believed my body was telling me. Swollen, painful joints have continued to challenge me, and I have kept working on forgiveness, innately knowing that suppressed pain and anger were causing the inflammation in my joints. Yesterday, I received a call from my doctor to see her after school regarding test results. Within the space of four words, my day turned upside-down, and the light-hearted, open me began to constrict and tighten inside. “You had rheumatoid arthritis.” The laughter and easy conversation stopped, as images of worst-case scenarios flooded my […]
Unconditional Love and Forgiveness
I often use stream-of-consciousness writing to find illumination when I am experiencing internal struggle. I want to share the wisdom that came through in my writing today.
Dear Beloved, talk to me about unconditional love and forgiveness.
Learning to Be
I want to celebrate an important milestone on my inner journey with you. I am opening into just being, and it feels wonderful! I have always allowed myself to be ruled by a steady stream of “shoulds” and “have tos” in my mind, and at long last, I am able to release and allow myself to just be. I sensed that I needed to do this as summer holidays beckoned and colleagues talked about their summer plans. Whenever I was asked about my plans, my answer was always the same, “I want time to just be.” I hadn’t given my response a lot of thought; it just rose from within me. As it was expressed, I knew it was what I needed to do. And that is exactly what the first two weeks of my summer break have been all about. Extended periods of time along our walking paths every day have provided me […]
The Quest for Beauty
How do you define beauty when it comes to people? The entertainment and advertising industries invest heavily in convincing us that beauty comes in packages that we can buy. If we buy into their obvious and not-so-obvious hidden messages, we believe that beauty comes packaged in the right diet, the right workout routine, the right make-up or hair colour, the right clothes, the right product. Consider the money, time, and energy that people commit to trying to create or to keep up with the “right” or the latest look — the look that is determined by companies and industries whose focus is solely one of profit, and not your self-worth. True beauty doesn’t come in a package with a bar code or a price tag. It can’t be found in a membership or an external “look.” It can’t be painted on, coloured, draped, coordinated, or regimented. Real beauty shines from […]
The Love That We Are
As I finished my meditation this morning, this prayer arose from within me: Let me live as an expression of the love that I am. The beauty and truth of these words resonate within me and express the essence of who I am… and who you are. Let us all live as expressions of the love that we are. Imagine the world we would create. We know that we are powerful creators because we create and experience that which we think and believe. We create with the quality of the energy we emit. Our lives are a testament to our creative power. The problem for most of us is that we have been creating unconsciously. I, for one, lived a good part of my life with no awareness or understanding that I was creating and drawing to me the painful experiences that I was having. That may have been the story of my past, but […]
Masquerade of Life (includes podcast)
Halloween isn’t the only day that many people wear masks and costumes. How many of us wear masks every day and pretend to be someone we aren’t in order to feel like we belong? How many of us are truly our authentic selves? I invite you to reflect on these questions: Have you added your own version of gossip about someone because everyone else was telling the latest and greatest news about other people and you wanted to feel included? Have you laughed at a joke that belittled a group of people or a gender because everyone else was laughing or because the joke-teller thought it was hilarious? Have you pretended that someone’s words didn’t hit hard and hurt deeply in order to play it cool? Have you pretended to be what you imagined someone else wanted so that they would like you and want to be your friend or partner? Have you subjected yourself […]
Shedding the Need to be a Caregiver and a Fixer
Have you spent your life putting everyone else’s needs before your own? Have you struggled with the idea of putting yourself first? Have you believed that if you love and give of yourself enough, you can heal or fix someone else? Then you and I have shared a similar journey — to learn to overcome the need to “give of ourselves to others” and to learn to look after ourselves. When I look back, I can attribute some of my need to give, “do for”, fix, heal, and “make better” to the generation in which I was born. I am part of the cohort that transitioned from growing up with traditional female role models to forging our own way as independent women. Our mothers and grandmothers devoted their lives to their families. They modelled selfless giving and self-sacrifice as they cared for their families and put their needs first. I realize that part of my […]
